In our previous articles, we already discussed the importance of oral health for the whole human organism. Recently, a group of scientists from the University of Helsinki found new evidence of this connection: as it turned out, periodontosis significantly increases the risk of stroke in people under 50.
Previous studies have shown a correlation between periodontosis cases and ischemic stroke, however, researchers discovered a similar effect in young patients. Of course, it is not the only factor in stroke occurrence, but seemingly quite important.
How does it work?
Periodontosis - is an inflammatory gum disease caused by a group of oral bacteria spreading on the teeth plaque due to poor oral hygiene, bad habits, etc. Also, some people have a genetic predisposition to periodontosis development.
The study found that the inflammation in the mouth usually allows oral bacteria to enter the bloodstream, especially during invasive procedures such as tooth extraction or root canal treatment. Usually, organisms eliminate these bacteria due to immune response, but in case of prolonged inflammation, some amount of bacteria remain alive and accumulate in the heart, causing the formation of blood clots that lead to strokes.
What to do about it?
Our mouth is one of the reachest microbiomes in our body, thus its balance is crucial for a healthy life. You can maintain it with good hygiene habits and systematic visits to your dentist - specialists can find early symptoms of periodontosis and prevent inflammation development.
Keep your oral health safe and you will protect the whole organism!
