Marijuana consumption is a pretty discussable topic where both sides of the dispute have solid evidence about its benefits and disadvantages. Recently, the latter party received one more scientifically proven argument – as it turned out, regular recreational cannabis consumption is linked to an increased risk of coronal and root surface caries and tooth loss.
Journal of the American Dental Association published research that involved data from 5656 people between the ages of 18 and 59 who were considered frequent recreational cannabis users – they "get high" at least once per month over 12 months straight.
As it turned out, compared to non-users, this group had:
- 17% higher risk of having untreated coronal caries
- 55% higher probability of root surface caries
- 41% higher risk of severe tooth loss.
According to the paper, the following research will try to find out how frequencies, quantities, and forms of cannabis consumption impact oral health.
