Alyn Morgan: Preparation to the Age Casual AI Practice in Medicine Article Main Image

Recently, Dental Review Media published an article by Alyn Morgan, co-founder and CEO of Mimetrik Solutions, a digital dental solution provider and a University of Leeds spin-out company.

He shared his opinion regarding society's adaptability to cutting-edge AI technology in medicine, providing a few examples from the UK experience of AI "legalization" in the sense of equipping such technology with a legislative framework. This way, they, at the same time, will enhance the rapid evolution of AI tools and make them safe for use. Let's review a few of his statements.

The current UK Minister of Science has a very good attitude toward artificial intelligence – he wants to make it serve civil needs and implement its extensive data processing capabilities in government operations. That's why Great Britain actively supports initiatives in that direction, such as reforms from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which includes regulation of Artificial Intelligence as a Medical Device (AIMD).

For instance, now MHRA is working on the so-called AI Airlock project, which aims to unify AIMD development and distribution in the country. Therefore, officials are trying to create cooperation between government regulators and businesses to streamline the solution production process, according to current healthcare challenges.

This initiative is particularly important for dentistry, an industry where AI is especially in demand. For instance, according to Mr. Morgan, most patients are positive about using this technology in their regular practice. The most anticipated improvements are:

  • Enhancing diagnostic confidence – 60.8% of recipients
  • Time reduction – 48.3%
  • More personalized and evidence-based disease management – 43%

Additionally, Alyn Morgan mentioned that dental services must explain to the patient how and why they will use AI technology during operations, procedures, or examinations. This is an important part of patient education, aiming to increase patient satisfaction and health outcomes after dental visits.
